Hoonigan Racing Division’s Ken Block nabbed a silver medal during the first of two RallyCross events taking place during Global X Games Munich this weekend. The Saturday race, which was part of a RallyCross double-header taking place during the Munich event, was a make-up event for the competition that was rained out during X Games in Barcelona back in May. The silver that Block scored brings his total tally of X Games hardware to five medals.
Block got things in “Barcelona” started right by taking first place during his heat (Heat 3) and advancing directly to the final. From there, things got chaotic. As the rain fell on the track, the first corner of the final had Block hit, spun out and sent off course, leaving him towards the back of the pack as everyone fought for grip and position. Fortunately though, the first attempt at the final was red flagged, forcing a re-start for the entire field. Off of the re-start, Block was able to come out of the first two turns sitting third overall as mayhem took place behind him with the rest of the field. As the race continued, Block was able to work his way past fellow Ford driver Toomas Heikkinen and moved himself into second place. From there, Block continued to reduce the distance to Liam Doran, who was sitting in first overall—and he nearly caught him. During the final lap Doran had suffered a puncture and Block was right on his rear bumper, nearly getting past before the checkered flag.
“I’m stoked that I’m coming away from today’s race with my fifth X Games medal,” said Block. “It was crazy out there off the starting line during the final and I’m glad I was able to come through the first corner of the re-start unscathed and in a good position to finish this race with a silver medal. I’m looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow for the actual Munich RallyCross race. Hopefully it doesn’t rain again!”
